MOST AND GREAT

By Alice Fulton

She told them about the paper in her, an old kind
of printing plant or drawing room, a profusion
free with green on last year's growth, the past
an enthrallment larger than the present. Paper
lanterns, blue aerograms. They spoke of themselves
as most and great and lived the etymology of hand:
sidedness, possess. Though it was sweet
to stand with them with the wind drinking dawn,
she felt missed. Uneasy. Romance felt shot.
Paper had installed in her tears and love.
But everything decayed—fruit tree, yew,
even those stupid lawns she hated.
The dance floor fed up, grieving, the garden
always arguing that it should be called a park.
